Preventive Dentistry

Prophylaxis (cleanings)

Dental prophylaxis consists of removing plaque and cleaning the teeth to prevent cavities and gum disease (gingivitis). During these cleanings our hygienist will be able to detect early stages of gum disease or tooth decay. After the prophylaxis, Dr. McCarley will look over your teeth to make sure there are no additional services needed such as a filling or crown. The ADA guidelines state that prophylaxis needs to be done every 6 months, or every 3 months if needed in special circumstances.

Regular Prophylaxis cleanings help to prevent these diseases from developing:

Periodontal disease: A bacterial infection that destroys the attachment fibers and supporting bone which hold the teeth in the mouth. Left untreated, these diseases can lead to tooth loss. The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on teeth. Without treatment, it is most likely your teeth will become weak, break, or fall out, leading to extreme pain.

Gingivitis: Inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis is due to the long term effects of plaque deposits. Plaque is a sticky material made up of bacteria, mucus, and food debris that develop on the exposed parts of the teeth. It is a major cause of tooth decay. If you do not remove plaque, it turns into a hard deposit called tartar that becomes trapped at the base of the tooth. Plaque and tartar irritate and inflame the gums. Bacteria and the toxins they produce cause the gums to become infected, swollen, and tender.

Halitosis: Bad breath. If you don't brush and floss daily, particles of food remain in the mouth, collecting bacteria, which can cause bad breath. Food that collects between the teeth, on the tongue and around the gums can rot, leaving an unpleasant odor. Dentures that are not cleaned properly can also harbor odor-causing bacteria and food particles.

Regular Care

closeup picture of teethIt is highly recommended that you brush your teeth with a good toothbrush, using ADA approved toothpaste such as Crest, Colgate, or Aim and then wash out your mouth using antiseptic mouth rinse such as Scope or Listerine.

If you use dentures, whether it be a full or partial, it is vital that it is washed and brushed daily as well.
